EDUCATION
DISSERTATION
My dissertation combined my love of media studies with my previous social sciences studies. I designed a research project aimed at exploring the active audience through social media and television. Active Audience Theory is a communication theory that suggests that audiences are not passive receptors of media content, rather they actively interpret their own meanings. I set out to examine how audiences decode information from media and how their interpretation may diverge from the intended meaning imbued by the producers of the media content. I then compiled social media research to test my theory. During my year researching and writing my dissertation, I gained an in-depth knowledge of media audiences and how they respond to certain forms of media. The findings of my dissertation are extremely relevant to the fields of advertising, PR and communication as it explored how audiences may react to and interpret media content and how that can lead to events such as a PR crisis or accidental media virality.
